You are fishing for comments, so I will oblige. I am interested in the symbolic role that South Africa plays for white western liberals. Why when i was 15 did i purchase a leftover 1994 South African ballot and hang it on my bedroom wall? The superficial answer is: I was really into Peter Gabriel that year. But beyond that: why did this particular sociopolitical conflict resonate with me so strongly? Was it the easily identifiable good guys and bad guys? Why does my mom read "inspirational" books by Desmond Tutu?
